CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Security was significantly heightened at a well-known high school in Muang district on Tuesday after police received an urgent alert from school management regarding an online threat, prompting thorough bag searches and a visible police presence at the school entrance.

Many students were taken by surprise by the unannounced security operation, which was triggered by a post discovered in a student Line group on Monday. The message claimed that two students planned to carry out a violent attack on their bullies at the school at 10 AM that day, causing panic among parents, some of whom arrived at the school to escort their children home amid fears of a repeat of the mass shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School.

Police from Mae Ping station responded swiftly to the call and conducted searches of students’ bags and backpacks as they entered the school premises. No weapons were found, and no violence occurred. The school management is now cooperating with police to identify and locate the students who posted the threatening message, as authorities work to determine the credibility of the threat and prevent any potential copycat incidents.

Provincial police commander Pol Maj Gen Yutthana Kanchan confirmed that he would seek a meeting with the management of all schools in Chiang Mai to discuss measures to prevent violence and improve security protocols across educational institutions in the province. The incident has intensified security concerns across the country following the August 7 shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, in which nine people were killed, including school officials, a student, and the alleged shooter. That event, the worst mass killing in Thailand in nearly four years, has heightened fears among students, parents, and school authorities about possible copycat attacks, prompting schools nationwide to step up security measures and vigilance in response to any threats or suspicious activity. Authorities have urged the public to report any concerning online posts or behaviour to prevent further tragedies.
